An introduction to the very popular tiger barb and its care. The tiger barb has long been one of the most popular and most kept aquarium fish species and there are today a wide variety of different color morphs available in the aquarium trade besides the common tiger barb. Such morphs include albino tiger barbs, green tiger barbs and golden tiger barbs.
GREEN TIGER BARB: 2.5 inches, but almost as tall as long; semi-aggressive; must be kept in a heated tank; notorious for fin nipping- keep a school of 8 or more (will school with other tiger barb color morphs) in tank 36 inches long or more to discourage this behavior, also avoid slow moving or long finned tank mates.Tank mates: hardier barbs, fast moving danios and rasboras, sturdier tetras.
Tiger Barbs are schooling fish and will not be able to thrive in any numbers lower than 5 or 6. The nipping is also massively reduced if they are kept in larger schools, so if you want to add them to a community tank, make sure there are plenty of them in there.

Most tropical fish keepers have kept Tiger Barbs at some point in time. They are not always the ideal community fish as they can pester and fin nip. However, they can be an ideal tank mate for some of the more boisterous fish such as some American Cichlids. They are usually good at keeping themselves out of trouble when they have to!
